All Good Things

words & music (c)2005
by Nancy Louise Freeman

All good things, as clever as we are,
  must come to an end.
I look out the window now:
The flowers so bright in April have shriveled in the sun;
  Wildfires scour the hills.
The birds have flown to skies unknown;
I'm marking time, but you're with me still.

The eye of habit will draw you in,
  Here and there, and to your place beside the sill,
And we'll be chasing ghosts again
  while the leaves outside the window blow;
Dozing in the Arizona sun,
  Or punching holes in the Carolina snow.

The good times come and gone
  like cats that tear across the lawn,
Oh look at them,
        Look at them go!

But I can't claim to be cheated,
  for these memries flood my mind when I awaken.
My heart says it's time to let go,
  Ah, but my heart has been known to be mistaken.

All good things, as clever as we are,
  must come to an end,
    my forever friend;
But if love is any guide,
       Then you're still by my side.
