Careless

words & music (c)1999
by Nancy Louise Freeman

em
The morning came without a prayer;
	      A              em
	noon left without a trace.
 C                 em
Sunlight slipped across the floor
	      B
	and slowly fell from grace.
em
Earth wind fire and water, she
	     A
	has given you this day;
C             em
Have you been careless? Have you
	   D        A7    em
	thrown your time away?

Clock's face is a mirror, and
	the numbers begin to melt
Into the smokey memory of
	the cards that you've been dealt.
Earth wind fire and water, did
	you leave them where they lay?
Have you been careless? Have you
	thrown your time away?

There should've been an answer at the
	bottom of that coffee cup;
There were no words of comfort but
	you might've made something up,
Earth wind fire and water, like
	the author of a play.
Have you been careless? Have you
	thrown your time away?

Evening wind is bitter and the
	alleys run with streams;
That isn't rain that's falling, but
	a thousand orphaned dreams.
Earth wind fire and water, is
	there nothing left to say
Except "I have been careless, and I've
	thrown my time away."
