CAPO III
Intro: [ am em G dm; C G em; F C G am; C G dm em am ]
 C                     G
Pity the man who must bend his will
       dm                    E
To no goal he can say is his own
    am                     G        em
But envy the man who has chosen his path
           E                    am       [ em G dm; dm E am ]
Though he wander the world all alone

        am                     E            am
We were sampling the gin at a quarter of three;
          C           G            dm            E
     the purser, the coxwain, the captain, and me
      F              C                     am
Kept watch o'er our hideout most scrupulously -
  em                 dm            am
-Hoist sail, there's none you can trust.
          am                         E           am
With the tower locked tight and the signal lamp downed,
          C          G              dm        E
     the willy-wisp danced in the plain all around,
            F              C                      E
When there came from the stores the most ungodly sound-
   em dm am [ em G dm; dm E am ]
-swing wide the axle; the wind and the dust!

Phantasms fled from the broken-wide door;
     as we stood there, the captain pushed through to the fore:
"Bring me a light, cowards! Bring me some more!"
-Hoist sail, there's none you can trust.
Gold coins that clattered and feathers that hissed
     flew about as if scattered by some giant fist
And a fearsome wolf bristled and snarled in their midst-
-swing wide the axle; the wind and the dust!

          am          em      G          dm
And the spoils gave way underfoot as the coxwain
            C           G             em
     struck out, and I lunged with my pike;
        F            C           G              am
But we met with thin air as the wolf dodged and bit,
              C            G     dm
     adding blood to the chaos as if it could
                     em am [ em G dm; dm E am ]
          know which way we'd strike.

The captain cried out, "Any id'iot can see
     no beast; but a thrall of the Wild Hunt set free;
"Though he taste of my pistol, he'll never taste me!"-
-Hoist sail, there's none you can trust.
One shot, and the terror had vanished from sight
     except for the pawprints both bloody and bright
That led at a gallop off into the night-
-swing wide the axle; the wind and the dust!

(And the captain said,)
Pity the man who must bend his will
To no goal he can say is his own;
But envy the man who has chosen his path,
Though he go to the grave all alone.
