        A             A7     D7
Let me tell to you a story about a lovely girl
 A                    E
Victim of old Cupid's arrow;
A                  A7          D
All at once she's moonstruck, madly awhirl,
F7                        E7
She used to be timid as a sparrow.

For she was far too busy with her books and ballet lessons
To fool around with makeup, hair, and clothes;
But suddenly there's been a change,
	and left the neighhborhood guessin'
'Cause who could cause that change, nobody knows.

A                 A7          D              D7
She waits at the window in a gown of satin green,
    A             A7            D              D7       A
A smile like Mona Lisa, and her eyes like an Egyptian queen -
            F#7         B7         E7                         A
My lady in chartreuse, who are you wasting your precious time on?

The clerk and the preacher never saw the like before;
She wore that satin gown to church, then to the grocery store -
My lady in chartreuse, who are you wasting your precious time on?

     D
Her Daddy got so angry you would hardly think it legal;
     A                                    A7
Her Momma had to take that girl to task.
     F7
"But Mother, Father," she replied, her manner calm and regal;
B                    F7         E7
"This old thing? Whyever do you ask?"

So from Sunday through Friday they still don't know his name;
The boys are all hovering 'round her door,
but there's not one of them who dares to take the blame -
My lady in chartreuse, who are you wasting your precious time on?

All her girlfriends should be fighting,
'cause she stole their boys for free;
Her newfound charms were too much to resist,
But how can they be fighting when any fool can see
As far as she's concerned, those silly boys just don't exist!

But she waits at the window in a gown of satin green,
A smile like Mona Lisa, and her eyes
done up like an Egyptian queen -
My lady in chartreuse, who are you wasting your precious time on?
